Paihia (pronounced Pie-hee-a)

Greetings!

We are preparing to leave for Paihia today - a town in The Bay of Islands, north of Auckland. We purchased a campervan on Trade Me (kinda like ebay/craigslist) which should serve us well. We bought it from Tony in Auckland, a great guy who has travelled the world with his wife and continues to do so well into his 60's! Well done Tony and thanks for the great deal on the van

So far, the trip to Auckland has been a time to visit with Bernie and Paul, orient ourselves, get stuff in order, make our plans, check routes and, as it turns out, eat a lot. I hope I fit into my scuba gear tomorrow. Yes, that's right, tomorrow we learn to scuba dive in what is reported to be one of the top 10 dive sites in the world - in the Bay of Islands. The amount of homemade perogies I ate last night, however, instills fear for my safe decent, I may never float back up! Bernie, Alex's cousin, is a fantastic cook so I should not complain - I wasn't complaining as I spooned one yummy forkful after another over the last 7 days - thank you Bernie for great food and a cozy stay! See you on the farm for Christmas! (we are spending Christmas with Paul and Bernie on Paul's dad's farm near Kerikeri - a Kiwi Christmas in the sunshine...weeeiirrd!)

And so off we go today, two jolly souls winding our way to Paihia - a three hour excursion according to our GPS (her name is Emily. Seriously, it's in the instruction manual, Emily). And thank god for the GPS, I think it will come in very handy for saving our relationship during map reading arguments and left-sided driving frustration - we'll just Ask Emily!
